چکیده

In contrast to previous opinions, recent investigations have suggested that increasing heart rate (HR) with atropine when moderate sinus bradyeardia accompanies acute myocardial infarction is not necessarily beneficial. To further characterize the influence of vagally mediated changes in HR during ischemia, we evaluated the effects of atropine and of electric stimulation of the vagus nerves on the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias during acute coronary occlusion in closed-chest dogs. Protection from occlusion-induced arrhythmia was not observed when 28 dogs receiving atropine were compared with 27 control dogs. Rather, the total incidence of ventricular arrhythmias was significantly higher (P <0.05) and ventricular fibrillation tended to occur

Characterization and Treatment of the Malignant Premature Ventricular Contraction

The majority of deaths from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) occur prior to the arrival of medical aid and appear to be due to ventricular fibrillation (VF). Since the premature ventricular contraction and bradyeardia are believed to predispose to VF, it has been suggested that administration of atropine or lidocaine during the prehospital phase of AMI may effectively reduce mortality in AMI. ...

Beneficial Effects of Vagal Stimulation and Bradyeardia During Experimental Acute Myocardial Ischemia

It is commonly believed that vagally-mediated bradyeardia predisposes to ventricular fibrillation (VF) during acute myocardial ischemia. Recent experimental studies, however, have shown that bradycardia and vagal stimulation independently raise the threshold for electrically induced VF in the ischemic canine heart. To determine the influence of vagal stimulation on the spontaneous development o...
